SANE NURSE
Heights Overview:
The Heights staff provides crisis intervention, case management services, advocacy, information and referrals, and practical assistance to survivors, providing client-centered safety assessments and risk management plans.
Essential Job Functions:
Licensed Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner who is certified in Texas. They will conduct SANE, domestic violence, and strangulation exams for the county at The Heights Family Justice Center as well as provide basic health records for all Heights clients.
Position Overview:
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will provide timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the sexual assault victim. The SANE exam may include a medical forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings.
Interact with The Heights SANE Medical Director as needed. (The Ellis County Health Authority services as the Medical Director of the Heights clinic.
Work closely with Baylor Scott & White in Waxahachie to provide care to clients whose needs are larger that what The Heights can serve. The Heights and Baylor have a working MOU for preferred access and care for our clients.
Schedule and manage other part time SANE nurses for exams.
Domestic Violence & Strangulation Overview:
This position will also provide domestic violence and strangulation forensic exams collecting evidence from domestic violence and strangulation victims.
Be available to attend strangulation training programs.
Basic Health Record Overview:
This position will also provide basic health records for all Heights clients. Needed Components of Domestic Violence/Strangulation and SANE Forensic Exams: ? Ability to perform emergent medical triage of the presenting patient(s)
? Perform and document DV/strangulation/sexual assault medical forensic interviews/exams accurately and timely
? Perform a complete medical forensic evaluation to include:
• Head-to-toe medical assessment for trauma, detailed genital/anal examination
• Forensic specimen collection and supportive documentation
• Photo documentation of bodily and genital-anal injuries with competent documentation
• Assess for mandatory reporting status and report when appropriate • Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines
• Ensure patient/medial record confidentiality at all times (HIPPA)
• Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care
• Administer prophylactic medications and emergency contraception • Coordinate referrals for appropriate follow-up care as needed
? Testify as fact witness to any/all cases performed while contracted as a SANE
• If nurse leaves position at the Heights as a SANE, it will remain to be an obligation of the individual RN to respond and coordinate with attorneys prior to and during the court process.
Maintenance of SANE Credentials:
? Maintain SANE credentials as required in the state of Texas.
Other Responsibilities:
• Participate in community awareness and outreach projects as needed and directed by The Heights Service Director
• Hours are M-F 8:30-4:30 and some on-call hours per month. This can include shared holiday coverage in primarily a back up capacity. The position will manage other PRN nurses as primary staff for after hours and holiday needs.
• Attend all Heights staff meetings and/or participate in MDT meetings • Report on service numbers to the Heights Service Director on a monthly basis. • Report on staff costs to the Heights Operations Director weekly and monthly
• Help provide consulting and feedback for software and equipment needed for this position
• Help implement software and equipment for position
• Membership in professional organizations, such as the International Association of Forensic Nurses and American College of Forensic Examiners strongly recommended
• Strongly recommend SANE-A/SANE-P certification after two years of practice
• Attend a minimum of 2 court proceedings per calendar year deemed “significant for observation”.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the Heights Service Director who currently serves as the direct supervisor of this position.
Qualifications:
• Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure or higher
• CPR or BLS certified
• TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum) current or within 6 months of employment
• Minimum two years nursing experience; specialty experience in women’s health, emergency department or intensive care (preferred), public health or psychiatry recommended with demonstrated autonomy and professional judgment in nursing practice
• Completion of the Texas Statewide SANE didactic training
• Successful completion of recommended clinical components to minimally include: • Conducting at least five normal pelvic exams with 10 recommended • Conducting at least five male genital exams with 10 recommended • Shadowing an experienced SANE for five exams and being shadowed by an experience SANE for five exams
• Obtaining at least five hours violent crime courtroom observation • Proficient use of all equipment
• Med-test upon initial SANE practice and every other year
• Recommended minimum of five adult exams performed within 12 month period, with completion of continued education, case studies, literature review, and chart reviews
